The Double Portion of Elijah: Part 1By Jerame Nelson
The double portion generation is on the rise! Today I want to talk about the double portion of Elijah and a new move that is coming to the body of Christ. This will be a generation of people both young and old, who are sold out to God. They will be a people of radical obedience to the Father’s voice, as well as a people of no compromise to the things of the world and sin. They will prepare the way of the Lord’s second coming. A generation of prophetic warriors who will live in the supernatural and manifest the kingdom of God everywhere they go.
So let’s take a deeper look at what the double portion of Elijah will look like.
The Evangelist and the Prophet
The anointing of the double portion of Elijah will be an anointing of the Evangelist and the Prophet combined. When these two offices come together they make up the double portion of Elijah. It is a fiery anointing of boldness and power that causes the hearts of the fathers to turn to the children and the hearts of the children to their fathers (Mal. 4:5, 6). We see this anointing at work in the life of John the Baptist. Luke 1:17 says that John the Baptist came in the spirit and power of Elijah in order to “turn the hearts of the fathers to the children: and the disobedient to the wisdom of the just, to make ready a people prepared for the Lord.”
The Bible clearly says that John lived a lifestyle of no compromise and that he called sinners to repentance. He would preach in the wilderness saying, “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand!” (Matt. 3:1, 2). He moved in such a powerful anointing of boldness and fire that many people came to a place of repentance with God and they wanted John to baptize them. This was the evangelistic side of the anointing on John’s life. Now let’s look at his prophetic side. Jesus Himself said of John the Baptist that he was a prophet and he was the greatest of all men born up to that point in time (Lk. 7:28). John moved in one of the most powerful prophetic anointings found in the Bible. He prophesied about Jesus being the One who would baptize with the Holy Spirit and fire (Matt. 3:11). As well, he was used by God to call out the Lamb of God and then baptize Him (Jn. 1:29?"34). John was a fiery witness who confronted the religious spirit of his day.
I believe that God is releasing this anointing, right now, to the body of Christ. The Lord is raising up a body that will be consumed by the zeal of the Lord of Hosts. It will be a Matthew 11:12 generation that will truly take the earth by force?"“And from the days of John the Baptist until now the kingdom of heaven suffers violence, and the violent take it by force. It will be a generation walking in the double portion of Elijah which is also a power anointing, and it will release true kingdom authority. It will confront the powers of darkness and show forth the reality of the kingdom of God.
In the last couple of years the Lord has allowed me to taste of this anointing in the school of His Spirit. I have learned some things about walking in, and manifesting, the spirit of Elijah. Therefore in this article I hope to be able to share some real keys that the Lord has given me for seeing the manifestation of the kingdom of God as well as give several main keys for living in the supernatural. I believe that this anointing is for the whole body, not for just a couple of people. God is raising up an exceedingly great army in this hour who will not be ashamed of their God.
Now let’s look at some keys to manifesting the kingdom of God.
How to manifest the Kingdom of God
The first thing I want to talk about that relates to manifesting the kingdom of God is how to manifest the glory of God. To give some context, I believe that the double portion generation will be a generation that preaches the gospel of Jesus Christ not in word only but with demonstrations of God’s power and love. Over the last couple of years the Lord has been teaching me a lot about manifesting His presence and power.
Now, having said all that, one of the key verses in the Bible concerning manifesting the glory of God in the earth is found in Habakkuk 2:14?"“For the earth will be filled with the knowledge of the glory of the Lord, as the waters cover the sea.” One thing the Lord has been speaking to me is that if we can come into a place of understanding of the knowledge of the glory of the Lord in the body of Christ, we will be able to manifest it.
So I want to share some of the things the Lord has birthed in my life involving the knowledge of the glory of the Lord. It’s my hope that you to can experience the manifestation of God’s glory through your life too.
Intimacy with God
The number one thing I want to talk about is intimacy with God. Without intimacy we can do nothing?"“I am the vine, you are the branches. He who abides in Me, and I in him, bears much fruit for with out me you can do nothing” (Jn. 15:5).
The first thing we have to do is to come into a place of being totally dependent on God. After all, Jesus is the vine and we are the branches. In order for us to grow in the deep things of God and to become a “manifester” of God’s glory we need to be totally connected to the vine?"Jesus. We have to be dependent on intimacy with God. It is only in the place of intimacy that we will be positioned to receive the necessary sap to bear fruit. The sap is the anointing and direction of God’s voice. The sap is what the Vine produces and releases to the branches so that they can bear fruit.
John 15:7, 8 says: “If you abide in Me, and My words abide in you, you will ask what you desire, and it shall be done for you. By this is My Father glorified, that you bear much fruit; so you will be my disciples.” It’s all about abiding in Jesus and having His words abide in us. The key is to come into a place of intimacy, to where we can hear the voice of God. The word abide in the Greek is: men’-o which means: to stay in a given place of expectancy, or to tarry or wait. God expects us be in a place of expectancy to hear His voice (and everyone is without excuse). John 10:27 says: “My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow Me.” God wants us to hear and follow His voice because if we become obedient to what God tells us to do, we will see the manifestation of God’s glory.
Obedience will manifest the Kingdom
One thing that will mark the double portion generation will be radical obedience. Elijah was a man of radical obedience. We see this in the power encounter that Elijah had when he called down fire from heaven and confronted King Ahab and the 450 false prophets of Baal (1 Kin. 18:20?"40). Right before Elijah called down the fire from heaven to burn up the sacrifice, He said, “Lord God of Abraham, Isaac, and Israel, let it be known this day that You are God in Israel and I am Your servant, and that I have done all these things at your word” (v. 36).
We see the key to Elijah confronting all the false prophets and confronting Ahab was hearing God’s voice first. The key is being obedient to the voice of the Lord. That is what brought the manifestation of the of God’s fire on Mount Carmel. It was also Elijah’s obedience to God’s instructions to go and present himself before Ahab (1 Kin. 18:1) that brought the manifestation of rain after three years of drought (vv. 41?"46). God told Elijah to present himself to Ahab, and he would send rain on the earth; and God sent the rain! (v. 45).
Jesus flowed in the Spirit the same way. Let’s take a look at two verses. Jesus said in John 5:19: “Most assuredly, I say to you, the Son can do nothing of Himself, but what He sees the Father do; for whatever He does, the Son also does in like manner.” Also in John 5:30 He said: “I can of Myself do nothing. As I hear, I judge; and My judgment is righteous, because I do not seek My own will but the will of the Father who sent Me.”
These two verses hold the key to manifesting the glory of God. If we can come into a place of seeing and hearing what God wants to do in the earth, we will come into a place of manifesting God’s kingdom every place we go. The double portion generation of Elijah will be a generation who will see and hear what the Lord is doing out of a place of friendship with Him. Then they will release what the Father says to release and it will bring forth a manifestation of God’s glory.
One big reason why it is so important to be obedient is because obedience is true humility before God. The Bible says that for those who humble themselves they shall be exalted and those who exalt themselves will be humbled (Lk.14:11). One of the keys to manifesting the glory of God is humility.
We need to examine humility because if we are going to go higher as a body we have to learn how to go lower. For years I have heard people preach on humility. But what does humility really look like? All I’ve ever heard on the subject is that we’ve got to humble ourselves. We’ve got to go lower and lower, and then lower and lower some more. It seems like everyone talks about humility but no one really brings “language” to it. So I began to seek God about what it means to walk in true humility.
One day God spoke to me: “Son, true humility is this. To do what I say when I say to do it. Anything outside of that is rebellion.” I was shocked at His reply. Then I said Lord I need a scripture for that one. Then a couple of days later the Lord answered my prayer by showing me Philippians 2:5?"8. In this scripture we discover the true definition of humility; one defined by the apostle Paul based on the life of Jesus.
“Let this mind be in you which was also in Christ Jesus, who, being in the form of God, did not consider it robbery to be equal with God, but made himself of no reputation taking the form of a bondservant, and coming in the likeness of men. And being found in appearance as a man, He humbled himself and became obedient to the point of death, even the death of the cross.
In this scripture we see humility connected to obedience. What made Jesus humble was His obedience to what His Father sent Him to do?"to die on the cross and save mankind (Jn. 3:16). If we can come into a place of obedience and die to ourselves, then we can walk in true humility and manifest the kingdom like Jesus did. I believe that the double portion generation will be obedient to what God’s heart wants to do in the earth and therefore they will see the manifestation of God’s glory. Being obedient will allow us to flow in higher levels in God. In fact, it will allow us to flow in the Spirit of counsel that releases the might of God.
The Spirit of counsel and might
I believe this is an anointing that the double portion generation will flow in. Before I discuss the Spirit of counsel and might more specifically, I want to give some background information.
The Spirit of counsel and might are part of the seven Spirits of God that rested upon the life and ministry of Jesus. Jesus didn’t have a 1 Corinthians 12 gift. Rather, He had the fullness of the Holy Spirit, also known as the seven Spirits of God.
Just to bring language to what the seven Spirits of God are, let’s go to Revelation 1:4. This scripture reveals something about the Holy Spirit that many have never seen or heard before. In fact, Revelation 1:4, 5 is a deeper explanation of the Godhead?"the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.
“Grace to you and peace from Him who is and who was and who is to come, and from the seven spirits who are before His throne, and from Jesus Christ, the faithful witness, the firstborn from the dead, and the ruler over the kings of the earth.”
The Father is: “Him who is and who was and who is to come;” the Son is: “Jesus Christ, the faithful witness;” and the Holy Spirit is: “the seven Spirits who are before His throne.” The seven Spirits of God are different than the nine gifts (manifestations) of the Spirit (1 Cor. 12:8?"10). The prophet Isaiah prophesied (Is. 11:2) of the anointing of the seven Spirits of God that were to rest upon the life and ministry of Jesus?"“The Spirit of the Lord shall rest upon Him, the Spirit of wisdom and understanding, the Spirit of counsel and might, the Spirit of knowledge and of the fear of the Lord.”
The seven Spirits of God work primarily in two’s. The Spirit of wisdom works with understanding, the Spirit of counsel works with might, and the Spirit of knowledge works with the fear of the Lord
One aspect of the counsel of God relates to our ability to hear God’s voice. His voice can come to us in many different forms?"in a dream or vision, an angelic encounter, or maybe even the audible voice of God. For example, Elijah heard God in His “still small voice” (1 Kin. 19:11, 12). Scripture says that when the Lord passed by Elijah there was a mighty wind, then in an earthquake, and then in fire, but He wasn’t in any of those manifestations. Instead the Lord revealed Himself to Elijah “after the fire in a still small voice.” God is raising up a generation of friends, who love the person of God more then just the manifestations; a people of His presence with the ability to hear His still small voice.
Now let’s talk about the Spirit of might. The Spirit of might is the raw power of God. One of my favorite examples of the Spirit of might resting on a man is in the life of Samson. Samson operated in the Spirit of might a lot. The Bible says that when the Lord’s Spirit came mightily upon him he tore a young lion apart (Judges 14:6). This is also a picture of what happens when we rely on the strength that God gives. We tear the devil apart. The Bible says the devil walks about like a roaring lion seeking whom he may devour (1 Pet. 5:8). It does not say he is a roaring lion. It says he walks about like a roaring lion. So when we come into a place of the might of God the devil becomes exactly who he is?"a baby lion.
Another example of the Spirit of might resting on a man is the apostle Peter. In Acts 5:15 we see the sick were taken out to the streets (on beds and couches) hoping that if the shadow of Peter would pass over them they would be healed!
So the key to the working of the Spirit of counsel and might is intimacy with God and obedience to His voice. That will release the manifestation of the Spirit and counsel of God. I can prove it to you out of the life of Jesus.
Jesus and the Spirit of counsel and might
When Jesus came upon the paralyzed man at the pool of Bethesda He only healed this one particular man (Jn. 5:9). Have you ever wondered why He only healed this one man in light of the times before when he healed all whom he came in contact with? I believe the answer is lies in verses 17 and 19. He told the Jews who were persecuting Him for healing this man on the Sabbath: “My Father has been working until now, and I have been working … the Son can do nothing of Himself, but what He sees the Father do; for whatever He does, the Son also does in like manner.”
What I believe happened was that the Father showed Jesus that He wanted to heal the man at the pool of Bethesda in a vision; probably while Jesus was spending time with the Him in prayer earlier that day. Then when Jesus saw the man that he had seen the Father heal (in his vision), He partnered with God by praying for the man. Then the Spirit of might was released and the miracle happened (v. 9). The Spirit of counsel and might always release true authority and the Spirit of counsel always releases the Spirit of might.
One place where the Spirit of counsel and might is birthed is in prayer. The Bible often mentions the fact that Jesus would get alone with the Father. Sometimes He would get up early before the day began and spend time with God. In fact, sometimes He would even spend all night in prayer (Lk. 6:12). I believe that it’s in the secret place of the Most High that the counsel and might of God is birthed.
God is looking for people of intimacy to partner with to see the miraculous. Many people want to see the power of God manifest, but are not willing to pay the price in prayer. They would rather go to the next conference or read the next healing book to get the anointing instead of just simply spending time with the Lord. The emerging generation of the double portion will carry a heart for the secret place. They will be a generation who will confront the powers of darkness and show forth the reality of the kingdom of God.
They will be a generation who will also give their lives to the Lord in prayer as well as fasting. The fact is, prayer and fasting is a way to quicken or accelerate our ability to hear God. For instance, before Elijah went into the cave at Mount Horeb and heard the voice of the Lord he went on a 40 day fast (1 Kin. 19:8). Jesus did the same at the beginning of His ministry (Lk. 4:1, 2).
I believe that prayer and fasting is a key to unlock the Spirit of counsel and might as well as a key to unlock a lifestyle of the walking in the supernatural.
Next week I will build on the Spirit of counsel and might by sharing about some power encounters that I experienced. I will also share some keys to true kingdom authority, supernatural acceleration, and living in the supernatural daily.
